How do you know what is "important" enough to write about?

Good question. I'm way past that habit. But i used to just re-read a section if i thought it was unncessary, and ask if it answers or hints at something...ANYTHING important to the storyline. If it didn't, i tossed it. Usually, if you even think that something might be fluff, it usually is.
