Does a person need to be a lawyer in order to not understand the plain language of the Constitution?

The constitution, no. All the junk that has been tacked on to it over the years, yes. The way this country works today is most uredly not what the founding fathers had in mind, and it diverges more and more from its intent with nearly every new amendment.
